Once a tree is cut down, the stump left behind will be an unsightly nuisance and can continue to cause problems on your property. Our staff at Seattle Tree Trim and Removal specializes in the removal of unwanted stumps, so you no longer have to deal with them. After removing the stumps from your property, your yard will be free of stumps, clean and safe, and ready for your new ideas.
At Seattle Tree Trim and Removal, we are able to grind out large stumps and root systems using specialized stump grinding equipment, which grinds the stumps and root systems below the ground. If you have one unwanted stump from a previous tree trimming/removal service or multiple unwanted stump remnants throughout your yard, we offer prompt, reliable, and complete removal of those unwanted stump remnants.
With the right equipment and experience, we can remove stumps of any size – whether it’s a few inches in diameter (from an ornamental tree) or many feet in diameter (from a large old-growth tree), with great care and attention to detail.
Hazardous Conditions – Stumps are major trip hazards, particularly on high-traffic paths and in areas with children at play. Stumps pose an even greater hazard when partially obscured by grass or plant material, and when mowing around stumps, there is a risk to both people and equipment, as the mower blade can catch on the exposed roots and create kickback hazards.
Insect/Pests – Stumps attract carpenter ants, termites, beetles, and other wood-boring insects. While these insects may remain within the decaying stump, they often move to healthy trees, wooden structures, or homes. Additionally, stumps serve as a refuge for rodents seeking shelter.
Fungi and Disease – Stumps become a medium for fungi and disease to grow, which can then infect other healthy trees and plants in your landscape. Certain fungi develop mushrooms that can be toxic to pets and children, while the decomposition process produces a foul odor that intensifies during the decomposition process.
Sprouting New Growth & Roots – Many tree species continue to send shoots from the stump and root system of the tree well beyond the date that the tree was removed. As the shoots develop, they draw energy from the remaining root system, causing difficulty with future removal of the stump and requiring continuous cutting to prevent a thick clump of sprout growth.
Limitations on Use of Property – Stumps limit your ability to use all of the available space in your yard. Stumps will hinder your ability to implement new landscaping designs, prohibit the planting of grass, limit your ability to start construction projects, and inhibit the placement of features such as patios, decks, or play structures in areas you desire.
Impact on Curb Appeal of Property – Visually unappealing stumps can diminish your property’s curb appeal and influence the perceived value of your property. Potential buyers may perceive stumps as evidence of neglected maintenance and raise concerns regarding additional problems.
Time-consuming Lawn Maintenance – Mowing around stumps is laborious and frustrating. The process requires you to maneuver around stumps, leave some areas unmowed, and has the potential to damage your mower. Ultimately, the inefficiencies associated with mowing around stumps will add up to considerable lost time and potentially costly repairs to your lawn mowers.
Our company maintains a complete inventory of heavy-duty professional-grade stump grinding equipment so that we can take care of any job we encounter.
Large Diameter Stump Grinders – Our heavy-duty large diameter stump grinder is designed for grinding stumps, which are typically found under large diameter trees. The heavy-duty grinding wheel is capable of grinding well beyond the base of the stump, typically at least two to three feet into the ground.
Small Diameter Stump Grinders – For those jobs with limited access (small yards, etc.), our small diameter stump grinder will allow us to maneuver through those tight spots and still produce excellent results.
Various Attachments – On our grinders, we have different attachments that enable us to cut all types of tree stumps.
Deep Grinding – Most people want their stump removed down to about six to twelve inches below grade. However, if you need to remove a larger amount of material (i.e., construction site) we also do deep grinding, down to eighteen inches or more below grade.
Removing Roots From Stump Area – In addition to removing the stump itself, we also remove the majority of the root system from around the area of the stump. This will prevent tripping hazards and make it easier to plant new plants or construct new homes or buildings.
Grinding Multiple Stumps – If there are multiple stumps that require removal, we operate efficiently to ensure that the job gets done quickly while still producing quality results. Our trained professionals plan the best possible sequence to remove all stumps and minimize time on your property.

Our team has experience grinding stumps from all the common tree species in Seattle.
Deciduous Trees – Maple, alder, oak, ash, birch, cottonwood, cherry, and ornamental varieties.
These tend to grind much more easily than evergreen trees, as they tend to be softer.
Evergreen Trees – Douglas fir, cedar, hemlock, pine, and spruce.
The resin in evergreen stumps makes them a little harder on our equipment, but we don’t have a problem with them.
Ornamental and Fruit Trees – Apple, plum, dogwood, Japanese maple, and other smaller ornamental varieties.
We grind small stumps fast and efficiently.
Fresh Stumps (Just Cut) – Recently cut stumps are firm and easy to grind. We can do this right away after you’ve had your tree taken down, or we can do it at the same time as your tree is being removed.
Older Stumps (Aging) – As stumps age, they will begin to break down and become soft. Over time, an old stump can fill the crevices and cracks with rock, dirt, etc. This can cause damage to our equipment if we’re not careful, so we take extra care when grinding older stumps.
Large Diameter Stumps (Large Mature Trees) – Large stumps from large mature trees are going to take longer to grind out and require more power to grind through, but we can do this, too. We’ve been able to grind out stumps larger than 4 feet in diameter.
Stumps In Difficult To Reach Areas (Near Foundations, Fences, Hillside, Etc.) – There may be situations where there is limited space to maneuver around the area where the stump is located. But again, our experience and smaller equipment allow us to reach most areas.
